Creature Feature
To co-incide with the release of Lorwyn 1197 creatures have changed type!

for more info.
146 creature types were eliminated so I assume no more creatures of those types will be printed in the future. Most one of a kind's were changed. Some with many cards, like ships were changed to a new creature type. Good news for Legends as all have received a creature type now. Many changed by adding another creature type to it's present one, like Knight to Human Knight, so the change affects little. 8 new creature types
Anemone, Anteater, Elk, Harpy, Nautilus, Scarecrow, Squid, Thalakos
were added. In all magic now has 216 official creature types. To read the new rules including the new rule on Changelings

Creature Feature every Sunday at 1pm...
at our South Pointe location. What is Creature Feature? Glad you asked. The idea came about one day a few years ago after a tournament where 'net deck wins' yet again. Clearly this is where all the 'pros' want to be, but it's hard on the casual player. And more and more we were losing the casual players to the point where even in Grand Prix Tials we were hard pressed to scrape up 8 players to make them official sometimes. Not a good thing. So after that tournament I decided that what made Magic fun in 1993-94 to some was not so anymore. Now days a casual player can show up but he is almost certain to be crushed like a bug on an 18 wheeler's windshield by the end of the day. So they quit coming to events and maybe to a larger degree quit playing altogether. This is clearly not good for the overall health of the game.
So that day a new format was born. How about a format where creatures ruled the game? Yeah, I know, all 'pro' players have stopped reading right now. Yet undaunted, I press on. After all most casual players and kids love creatures. And that's who we're after here. Plus all beginners, 'pro' players included, started by ogling the biggest, fattest creature in the first booster pack they opened. It's natural. So the game had to be based around creatures. But it needed a special twist. How about if all creatures had to be the same type. So if you had a Goblin deck, then all creatures in the deck had to be Goblins. And in order to insure that the game maintained it's creature based strategy the deck had to contain a minimum of 1/3 creatures, even after sideboarding. Okay? Good. Now the format. Well, Type 1, or Vintage as it's now called, was out because most casual players don't have a full boat of Moxes. But Legacy was ideal because it included all card sets, so even players that had been out of the game for years could still play. Plus it gave a bigger field from which to choose creatures and we didn't have to explain why his Elvish Scout couldn't be played. Plus players that were sensitive to their ratings didn't have to worry unless they were trying to build up their Vintage rating for some reason.
Now that we had the format and a rough design we needed to refine it somewhat. The deck must have only a single creature type. So no Ball Lightnings mixing it up with your Goblins. Also no spell that created creatures of a different type were permitted. No Call of the Herd in with your Goblin deck. One creature type. Period. Treetop village was not welcome in your Goblin deck either. One Creature type. Get it? If you have to ask the question, 'can I play a ... in my Goblin deck', chances are the answer is no. However a creature that has two types, for instance Zombie Cleric could be played in a Zombie deck or a Cleric deck. Mistform Ultimus can be played in any deck because it is all creature types. Also creatures that count as a creature of that type are allowed but cannot be counted as one of the required creatures. Note that Wizards has renamed most of these creatures so that should not be an issue anymore. But you will still need to check the oracle ruling to make sure. For instance Sliver Queen has been renames as Legendary Creature - Sliver.
Legacy is a large card pool. Several player suggested banning certain cards, like Engineered Plague or Tsabo's Decree right off the bat. However since I want to sanction these events then we need to follow the official banned list for Legacy tournaments as set by Wizards. And in the end I chose to let it play itself out. History has told me this was the correct move. Neither card has proved particularly overwhelming. Engineered Plague keeps the Goblin population to a reasonable proportion of the decks and Tsabo's Decree is expensive enough to make it hard to play. Plus if we ban cards that give creatures a hard time do we also have to ban cards that give creatures an advantage just to smooth out the curve. History in the game has shown me time and time again that given a large enough card pool the players will take care of the problem themselves. Ironically enough a year or so ago Wizards had an extended version of Creature Feature called
Tribal Wars
at the 2003 Invitationals. They did ban these cards along with a number of others and guess what? The top decks were all weenie creature decks. Gee, go figure. But in Creature Feature we don't want anyone asking 'where's the beef?'
Creature Feature is popular enough that we have a Pro class, Semi-Pro class, and Amatuer class each Sunday. Players can start in Amatuer if they are truely just beginners. Semi-Pro is for experianced players and Pro is for those players that are very experianced players. However the format takes care of itself as 3 wins in Amatuer moves you up to Semi-Pro and 3 wins in Semi-Pro moves you up to Pro. We currently award a $10 gift card to the winner of the Amatuer and Semi-Pro classes. The Pro class top prize of $50 is awarded for winning with a new creature type that has not won before. If you win with a creature type that has won previously then the prize is $10. For a complete list of Creature types that have won in pro class refer to the listing on the bottom of the page.
Well, that's pretty much it. How successful has it been? Outstanding! While most of the players are casual and seldom seen at the PTQ's there are a few showing up now at PreRelease Events. Also a few have been showing up on Friday Nights to play standard again. Some veteran players returned and had a blast. I've seen some players that I haven't seen since Mirage or before. An interesting note is that deck construction is much harder than one might think and the environment is pretty competitive. Seldom does a deck go undefeated. For the complete rules
